When Should You Resole Dress Shoes?

5 min read · By Shoe Express Repair & Shine · May 12, 2026

The best time to resole a dress shoe is before the hole goes all the way through. Once water, grit, and pavement reach the midsole or footbed, the repair becomes more involved and sometimes more expensive. If you wear dress shoes regularly in Overland Park or the Kansas City metro, checking the soles every few months can save a pair that would otherwise get retired too early.

The easiest signs to spot

Look at the ball of the foot first. If the leather sole is thin enough to feel soft under your thumb, it is time to talk to a cobbler. If you can see stitching exposed around the edge, the sole is nearing the end of its useful life. If there is a dark, damp-looking spot in the center, that usually means the sole has been absorbing water. A small surface scuff is normal; a soft spot or pinhole is not. Bring the shoes in before that pinhole becomes a full hole.

Heel wear matters too

A worn heel can change how a shoe feels and how your foot lands. If one side of the heel is slanted down, the shoe is pushing your step out of alignment. Heel caps and rubber heel lifts are usually straightforward repairs, especially when caught early. Waiting too long lets the wear move into the stacked heel itself, which can require rebuilding instead of replacing a simple wear layer. That is still fixable, but it takes more time and costs more.

Leather vs. rubber half-soles

A full leather sole keeps a dress shoe closest to its original build. A rubber half-sole adds grip and usually lasts longer in Kansas City weather, especially if you walk through parking lots, rain, snow, or salted winter sidewalks. We recommend based on how you actually wear the shoe, not based on what sounds most traditional. For office shoes that see daily pavement, a rubber half-sole is often the most practical choice. For formal shoes worn occasionally, leather may be the better match.

What to do before the next wear

If you are unsure, bring the pair in during open hours. We will look at the sole, heel, welt, lining, and upper leather together. If a simple heel repair is enough, we will say that. If the shoe needs a full sole, we will explain the options before any work starts.
